Plundergrounds is a series of theme-forward zines devoted to Dungeon World adventures. Each 24-32 page issue features a new and different setting with enough content to keep a group of players happy for 1-5 sessions.

This one is a special double-issue, an adventure and an actual play account, both 32 pages.

In One Bite features a super hard opening frame (everyone is on a sinking ship) but then flows (pun intended, as they are washed down the gullet of a Leviathan) into a modular bio-dungeon. The focus is on puzzle-like rooms, some body horror, and general strangeness.

I did all the art for this one, as I did for Beyond the Black Gate, but I used a different style this time. I hope that's a good thing. I'm pleased with the results at any rate.

I also included lots of GM advice. (Way more than I usually would.) It was initially written to run as a one shot at cons to introduce new players to Dungeon World, and I have tested it as such. My largest group during the testing phase was 7 and I finished in 3 hours, including character generation and teaching the game. (Only one person at the table had played Dungeon World before and that was in the previous con session that morning.) I recommend 4 hours, though; 3 is pushing it. At the same time, In One Bite, could easily be played as 3-5 sessions. You should find it to be really flexible.
Books & Bullets is a Cthulhu adventure game that shoots the line of complexity between Trail of Cthulhu and Cthulhu Dark, and which avoids the Insanity death spiral without taking the sting out of the Lovecraftian horror.

The game includes three single-sided play sheets.

Players – introduction, story hook, character sheet, character generation rules, dice mechanics, and rules for insight, mythos checks, and helping/hindering.

Mythos Master – your agenda, insanity & death, scaling mythos checks, running adventures, and an introductory mystery

Resources – (for everyone) tech by era, word lists, name lists, equipment list, sources of inspiration

This game is FREE to everyone and released under the CC-BY-NC-SA license. You are encouraged to link others here to get the game.

This is a small game I have been fiddling with for some time. The inspiration came from two articles about how the 1937 edition of The Hobbit differed from its more commonly read revised version and what kind of world was implied by that edition, sans Lord of the Rings or The Silmarillion. The articles probably explain it better than I can, so I linked them below, but here is the introduction text to the game.

You are an adventurer in the world of The Hobbit. Specifically the world as it appeared in the 1937 edition of that book. Anyone can be a wizard with the right knowledge, trolls turn to stone in the sunlight, animals or magical objects can speak, elves aren't always nice, and the wild is full of terrible creatures like goblins, giant spiders, and even dragons!

You need 3d6 and the rules (link below) to play. When you print the sheet, set it horizontally/landscape, two-sided, binding on short edge. And don't let the printer scale it down. Then fold it accordion-style so that the title is on the front and the character sheet on the back. (Fold it once more if you want to stick it in your pocket.)
Plundergrounds is a series of theme-forward zines devoted to Dungeon World adventures. Each 24-page issue features a new and different setting with enough content to keep a group of players happy for 1-5 sessions.

Character death is a part of Dungeon World and the Last Breath move is one of the game’s signature elements. But what if death were the focus of a session or three? What terrible purpose would cause characters to journey in Death’s realm? What strange things lie beyond the Black Gate? How would they escape Death’s greedy clutches?

Journeys into the underworld are as old as literature, literally. Gilgamesh enters the land of the dead hoping to bring back the secret of immortality. Odysseus, desperate for advice, sailed to the edge and poured out libations to the seer Tiresias. Finding himself lost in the dark valley, Danté navigated the rings of hell to find a way back out. And those are just a few stories from Western culture. Look up Yudhishthira, Izanagi and Izanami, the hero twins of the Maya, Kaknu, and King Gesar!

“Appendix N” works for this issue are:

The Earthsea Trilogy (books, 1968-72), Ursula K. Le Guin. In Earthsea, dead spirits go to a dark valley under strange stars. That was my starting point.

City of the Singing Flame (short story, 1931), Clark Ashton Smith. I have always loved stories about magic portals and this story haunts me with its alluring, immolating column.

The Passing of the Grey Company (chapter in Return of the King, 1955), J. R. R. Tolkien. The tone of Aragorn’s ride to call out the oath breakers is so freaking awesome!

What You Carry (200 word RPG, 2017), Evey Lockhart. First line: “Awaken and fall through the bottom of your grave.” It’s amazing; read it and others at https://200wordrpg.github.io.
It's a little tricky to work with at first, but the format is really pleasing for writing microgames. Here are some folding instructions and a couple of PocketMod games I made.

http://www.rayotus.com/jsg/pnp-spacetrucker-pm.pdf
Space Trucker is inspired by 70s "trucker" stories/music - with a dash of Kung Fu, Space Opera, and Funk thrown in. The system is Minimal d6 by Norbert Matausch. The format was inspired by Sean Wills' Thronelands.
http://www.rayotus.com/jsg/pnp-flashfantasy-pm.pdf
This game is an expression of the Minimal d6 system, by Norbert G. Matausch, suitable for playing OSR modules. Or at least that was my goal; you can decide if I succeeded.

Space Trucker fan Greg Gelder created this cool supplement. It includes more characters, more trucks, more maniacs, more minions and monster, more planet names, and more missions! It also has a list of cool truck stops, a Galactic Citizen's Band radio jargon glossary, and a list of Swag/Style elements. Greg's purpose here is to expand on some of the promise of Space Trucker that didn't fit into the original PocketMod, specifically to add some funk, punk, disco, and hobo elements.Ray Otushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398394072713660199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5621791612260026164.post-35992798104798027632017-12-19T10:38:00.000-08:002018-11-15T17:35:31.867-08:00Plundergrounds 5: The Far Erinyes

The Far Erinyes is a crossroads - something that I think every GM can use. It's a city that sits at the nexus of several adventure worlds:

In This Issue

The Olvani Spire is an island-city where people from all over the known world might run into each other. However, it's also at the edge of the known world and a secret world lies inside of the spire, so it might also be a place where people go to get lost.

Of course the seas that surround the Erinyes provides grand opportunities for sailing adventures, and...

The Luminferous Ether is a jumping off point for sword-and-planet stories; swashbuckling in fantasy "space."

Finally, the mysterious world under the waves awaits those who might attempt to invade the realm of the Tritons!

In this issue you'll find lots of great questions and impressions to get things started, new monsters, new mini-systems, lots of quick NPCs, and three dangers in which characters might become embroiled.

This 20-page free zine is a system-neutral, collaborative, campaign frame. It was originally intended to be part of issue 5, Rakka's Raiders, but the concept was a pet project for me and I wanted it to have its own space.

Pack World will help you quickly generate a campaign setting about a "pack" of riders who are devoted to each other and to their remarkable animal friends. Inspiration comes from The Dragon Riders of Pern and Elfquest.
Creature Name: tag1, tag2, tag+, special quality. Instinct: to whatever. Moves: move1, move2, move+. Weapon (damage, tag1, tag2, tag+) n HP, n Armor.
This brilliant 1-page “game poem” was designed by a group of UK roleplayers (https://www.ukroleplayers.com/wiki/Cheat_Your_Own_Adventure) and released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.
You eagerly open the book at page 1 and begin your journey of page-flips and hard choices. Ahead of you lies an adventure in which you decide your destiny! Maybe this is the book you will get through without dying? If not, there’s always a do-over. What are you waiting for? Go and cheat your own adventure!

Goblintown is a role-playing game about the miserable (but never dull) lives of a warren of goblins trying to defend their community against endless perils. It is suitable for either a one-shot or a short campaign.

Each session plays out in about 60-90 minutes, but you can easily chain two or three events together for a more involved story about the volatile fortunes of the town. The game is designed for a group of 4-6 total players: 1 GM who “runs” the game and 3-5 players with goblin characters.

Each regular game session begins with the introduction of a threat, and then becomes a race between the goblins, who are trying to eliminate or neutralize the threat, and the threat, which is trying to destroy the town. This structure makes Goblintown unusual for a role-playing game in that players can essentially win or lose the game. Of course, the real “win” in any role-playing game is a good story; the story of losing the town can be every bit as interesting as the story of saving it.

Sorcerers & Sellswords is a one-page game derived from John Harper’s Lasers & Feelings. The game’s flavor is weird fantasy - think Clark Ashton Smith, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, the early tales of Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser, Thundarr the Barbarian, etc.

The world is full of dangers and mystery. A person’s safety and livelihood often depends on their wits or a strong arm. Sorcerous powers are available to those desperate or insane enough to use them.

Both S&SS and L&F are fantastic for pick-up games and one-shots. They can sustain short campaigns or even longer play for people who want episodic adventure and aren’t as concerned with things like consistency/simulation or leveling up. The play style is very much in the Powered-by-the-Apocalypse tradition (experience with Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, or another PbtA game helps), though the dice mechanic is different.

With this edition, I've stretched the "one-page" definition a bit. You only need the first page to play, but I have included a "lexicon" that can be printed on the back of the rules, as well as a page of blank character sheets. So it’s a one-page game, but the file has three pages. The PocketMod includes a character sheet but no lexicon.
